About
An instrument for reading scripture as an adult: the text stays primary, and the software’s only job is to show what is underneath it.
What it is
A quiet reader for the Bible with a checkable apparatus in the margins. Geography that is computed rather than remembered. The translators’ own footnotes, reproduced as they wrote them. Patterns in the text you can verify by looking. Where a question is genuinely open, it is left open.
It is built around a single conviction: that the reader is an adult who can hold an unresolved question, and who is better served by an honest blank than by a confident guess.
What it is not
- Not a quiz. Nothing here scores you. There are no right answers and no correctness feedback.
- Not a retelling. The site never puts scripture in its own words. The actual text is always on screen and is always the spine.
- Not for children. No illustrated characters, no cartoon faces, no mascot, no friendly narrator.
- Not a feed. The page ends when the passage ends. There is no next thing waiting to catch you.
- Not a devotional voice. The margins tell you what can be shown. They do not tell you how to feel about it.
The stop
Every chapter ends with one question and room to answer it, and the link onward does not appear for several seconds. This is the most important feature on the site and it was built before any of the interesting ones, so that everything else had to fit around it.
The risk in a project like this is not that it fails. It is that it succeeds at the wrong thing — that it becomes an impressive instrument for learning about scripture, and quietly substitutes that for knowing its author. The stop is the guard against it. What you write there is yours: it is kept in your own browser, and nothing is sent anywhere unless you press Keep this — which saves that one reflection to the author’s private notes and asks for a single sentence back. Nothing you write is scored, analysed, published, or used for anything else.
Why “Inclusio”
An inclusio is a literary frame: a passage that closes on the words it opened with, so that everything between is held inside the repetition. Jonah is one. God’s first words in the book and God’s last words in the book are about the same city, and the prophet’s entire flight, rescue, obedience and sulk happen inside that bracket.
It seemed the right name for a tool whose whole argument is that the text has a shape, and that noticing the shape is most of the work.
Status
Early. Six books so far. Its sources’ licences were checked against each publisher’s own terms (see Sources); Accuracy keeps the list of known gaps, honest rather than short.
